you can build this box for about $325:

(1) intel 2.5 ghz, 800 mhz fsb, 2 mb l2 cache, dual-core processor [e5200]
(1) intel ich7 motherboard [dg41ty]
(2) mushkin 1gb, 4-4-4-12 sdram [991603]
(1) western digital 640 gb, 16mb buffer hdd [wd6400aaks]
(1) antec 380 watt psu [ea-380d]
(1) antec case [three hundred]

then you just need a keyboard, mouse, power cable, and monitor.

E5200 :(

Better spend 50$ more and get a Core 2 CPU

$65 for e5200 (2 mb l2, 800 mhz fsb, 2.5 ghz)
$118 for e7400 (3 mb l2, 1066 mhz fsb, 2.8 ghz)

so $53 more

cas goes up to 5-5-5-15, but there's a good deal on the ram at least.

i wanted to keep the price close to $300, though.

The memory is overclocked 1066MHz memory. I avoid any overclocked memory like the plague.

For 53$ you will get a much better CPU, E5200 is a pentium, E7400 is a Core 2. Big difference. If you must go for the cheapest price then I would recommend getting AMD. AMD CPU's are often a much better performance/$ ratio.

for what it's worth, I've only ever bought asus motherboards and have never had a bad experience with one. but I feel like people say this about a lot of brands of motherboards, so.

ASUS P5QL-VM Intel B43
$99, (1) x16pcie, (0) x1pcie, (3) pci, (4) ram, fan headers ok, serial port is great

now two of the six sata2 channels aren't working. i'm blaming either the motherboard or the memory.

it's an asus P5QL-VM DO/CSM. i just sent a message to asus support. :/

Hi,

I'm running FreeBSD 8.0. It was working perfectly for four weeks. All six SATA channels were working well under AHCI mode.

However, recently, two of the SATA channels quit working. Can you please issue an RMA?

Here are the kernel messages showing the errors with channels 3 and 5:

Hm ... We send Asus boards to Asus repair center in Czech for repair ... Can take up to 6 weeks :( Sure hope it's faster in the US for you...

btw. They will probably not be impressed with your FreeBSD dmesg ... I would not have told them I was running FreeBSD because often they will say something to the effect of "Install Windows and call us again"...

i just got a response.

...

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

My name is Stacey and it's my pleasure to help you with your problem.

Please clear CMOS as the following steps:
1)Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord.
2)Remove the BIOS battery.
3)Move the clrtc(besides the battery) jumper caps from [1-2] to [2-3]
for 5-10 seconds, then put the jumper caps back to the original position, [1-2].
4) Re-install the battery.
5) Plug the power cord and turn ON the computer.
6) then, load default settings, save and exit.
Then rebuild AHCI again for a test.

well now that i got an sua750, i can use either serial or usb to get battery backup information.

also, i think that was a wiring issue. i rewired, and everything is fine now. the two drives at the end of the chain weren't getting enough amps to spin-up.

I want something more powerful than that since this will probably end up doing more than file serving.

I've got 2 500 GB drives. and maybe another smaller one that's like 40 or 80.

I got the build down to $303 after shipping.

I would say scrap the 80G drive and get a mainboard with one IDE channel (Many cheaper have those).

What configuration are you looking at anyway?
I have an Atom 330 as fileserver, that works pretty well.
