this is spur from dp's post on the index card system ( http://www.thinktankforums.com/thread.php?thr … #post-3236 ).

so i'm really interested in this stuff. i like archive and cataloging my life. i like the index card system with two exceptions:
1. it will inevitably take up a significant amount of space
2. it isn't the most accessible

let me explain:
1. if i want my cards secure, i have to lock them up in a fireproof safe. if i want to take them all with me when i move, i might be taking a box full or a crate full. it's just not portable.
2. the main idea is that you put one piece of information on each card. the reference is the time stamp. but what if i'm like "what was that one quote i used to like a lot? it was something about innocence, but i cant remember when i wrote it down." i'm screwed if i have a huge stack of cards.

so i call for an equivalent digital solution. i have been using google notebook for this purpose. it's portable (i can access it from any computer on the internet), it had both private and public notebooks, and it archives shit you trash. you can also search them!

so why not just use google notebook? i'm not sure. but i think i can make a better system.
1. multiple categories. in google notebook, it's a completely hierarchical system. notebook>section>note. i like this, but i also want notes to have other properties that the index card system has. first, i want timestamps on every modification to the note. i want stars. i also want categories (idea/gtd/etc. and subjects like school/websites/photos).
2. i want a system that can contain information that the indexcard cannot--what about attachments like files, images, etc.
3. naturally, the system can be shared with friends online. there will be privacy control just like with google notebook. it's also portable, searchable, and securable.

thoughts?

I agree with you lucas. But still there's something about paper 'n pen. Nothing can replace that feeling and the smell of paper.

I never could use any sort of system like that--and I have tried. It's just that the stuff that I tend to write down becomes less important with each day. Anything good I have going I remember always, or is part of a larger project that wouldn't fit on a card anyway.

But that's me, and I like your direction for that, larz. Perhaps a ttf/life_card function?

i'm trying out the index card system to get a feel for it and to see what needs to be improved. i have created 26 index cards in the past 12 hours. :o
