i'm not angry, but i'm filled with hate. this will be the thread of hate.

ONE

i hate the sense of entitlement that so many kids of generation y possess. for example in the status quo, people of generation y feel cheated and wronged that they cannot find employment. people are not born into this world with the guarantee of meaningful, well-paying employment. ultimately, one must perform work that creates value for someone else.

I hate people who walk slow. I mean I understand some people are short, or old, maybe tired. Fine, that's awesome cool. But, move to the right. The general rule of thumb is stay to the right, pass on the left... it's not fucking rocket science. If you are too dumb to figure that out, you are too dumb to live.

And you may be thinking, well shit dude, calm yerself. I won't... you know why? When you live in a pedestrian heavy city of 20 million+ people... one asshole blocking a sidewalk, subway platform, or stair well can literally slow down thousands of people with a few minutes of mind fuckingly slow zomg I am 30 years old and still freak out when I step on an escalator. You know what that does? YOU KNOW WHAT THAT DOES!?!! It slows people down logarithmically. Trapping them day after day in the endless torment of commute. Fuck you walking retard, you are killing people with your selfish ignorance. I hope you get hit by a bus... probably weren't moving fast enough.

How is that for hate.

I dunno. I hate chinese bag ladies on the subway. And I think that is a bit racist.

I try not to be racist. People are just people and all that. But chinese bag ladies... dear lord. We all know it in NYC. We know who they are, they are the little old asian ladies with the seventy freaking red or yellow bags. They get on the train and it's freaking thunderdome until they get a seat. They will hip check pregnant ladies to get a seat... literally I've seen it happen twice.

Maybe it's cultural... I don't care. It's bloody rude. I got up once from my seat for a pregnant lady. This fucking bag lady comes out of nowhere like a bat outta hell to snake the seat. I had to basically block her. And she was like angry at me.

Chinese bag ladies have made me at least a little racist. I didn't go out looking to hate chinese bag ladies. But, there it is. I do. They taught me to hate them. In that regard, I have to remind people, that at times generalization isn't a product of ignorance, it can be a product of experience. I know that culturally this may be totally acceptable, but you know what... I don't have to tolerate it. It's still scumbag.

What am I supposed to do about that? I don't want to hate chinese bag ladies. But I can't stop them from being horrible people on a daily basis. So... here I am. Slightly racist. Through no fault of my own. Weasley, I say to you... sometimes racism isn't something someone wanted or chose. Sometimes there are legitimate reasons people hate each other.

For instance, ask a finn what they think of russian people. That hatred goes back a long ways. And it is utter vitriol. But it comes from very real events that happened in the past. People still alive today fought the russian invasion. Their kids were raised to hate russians because, well... russia started a war with them without any justification.

Does it really matter that they are Chinese? It sounds more like you would hate any lady with tons of bags who acts like that.

To be real racism I think you'd have to find a non-chinese bag lady totally tolerable. That would definitely tell me you're racist.

a bum in the entrance of a burger king tried to get a ride with me from coeur d'alene, idaho to missoula, mt. i ultimately said "no, i don't feel like it." i didn't want to share my car with a bum for two hours. so then he asked to "borrow" money for a greyhound ticket. i told him i'd "give" him money and handed him two dollars. he asked if that's all i could do, so i said that's all i'm going to do. i added, "it's that or nothing." he got pissed and stormed into burger king with the two dollars i gave him.

you're/your, to/too, then/than actually aren't that bad, at least they're pronounced the same. I can give you some examples where it's also pronounced different -- Making it at least three times more idiotic.

For example, the Dutch verb "kan" means "can", and "ken" means "know".
It is not uncommon for people to use "ken" instead of "kan". It is just stupid, they're completely different verbs.
I cannot help myself from flinching and looking confused as if I had no idea what nonsense they just brabbeld and ask "You mean you CAN'T ...".

your/you're and than/then are not pronounced the same, omg

i see how the dutch confusion would be frustrating, but i don't see how it's different than this english shit. "you're" is a subject with copula, and people fuck it up with "your" (both in pronunciation and writing), which is a possessive pronoun. they're not two different verbs, but two completely different parts of a sentence.

plus, people in the u.s. fuck up "can i" vs. "may i" all the time--different verbs

The person asking is the one who has the best idea of what he/she is capable of, so he/she shouldn't even be asking.

Basically "can i" is a total fuck-up of a question.

> and "you're" and "your" are pronounced the same...

maybe this is a matter of dialect, but these two words are not homophones

you're = yoor; unstressed yer
your = yawr, yohr, yoor; unstressed yer

> which dictionary? merriam-webster doesn't make this distinction.

it kind of does--but then goes back on itself:

may : 1.b. have permission to: be free to
can : 1.a. know how to. b. be physically able to.

definition 2 says 'have permission to —used interchangeably with may <you can go now if you like>'. however, the "archaic" usage of "may" is identical to "can." so... these two articles contradict each other. oxford dictionary is similarly divided.

also see usage discussion on this page and this page

may vs. can:
---------------
1) now that it's clear, i may climb up to the top of the rock wall, but i don't know whether i can.
2) as a human, i can urinate; however, my teacher told me that i may not urinate on other children.

the distinction is pretty clear. neither of these examples contains particularly strange usage

the configuration structure is just a big turd. you just get /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf with the default configuration file.

ubuntu comes with a really nice stripped down main config. the main config includes a bunch of other configs, which are nice to edit, keep track of, and work well with the stripped main config.

for some reason, apache keeps giving me all of these forbidden errors, and it won't let me http-auth into an svn repository. i've analyzed everything, and it's all in order. the right modules are being called, permissions everywhere are perfect, everything looks great. but it doesn't work and it pisses me off.

We use Fedora Core at work. That sort of works for me .... except .... For the SELinux part ... I've grown a serious hatred for SELinux, those people really don't understand security ...

Apache config is way to big by default, it should be "start basic, expand as needed", not "start bloated, strip down as needed".
I actually made a stripped down version of Apache and published it on my site (As much for my own reference as anything else).
In general, I just try to avoid Apache ... Hiawatha is my webserver of choice nowadays, lighttpd or ngix also works for me.

I hate when professors won't respond to emails.

Here's the deal, we're studying 2^k factorial designs for doing performance studies on, well whatever we want to study. The problem is in the lectures, he told us that to compute main effects and interaction effects, we should use 2^(k-1) for main effects and 2^k for interaction effects. He also puts up notes from the lectures, but in the notes he has both main effects and interaction effects being computed using 2^(k-1). Well then I read through the chapter in the Raj Jain text for the class, and to compute both the main effects and interaction effects he uses 2^k.

so right now I'm like wtf. so far I've decided to say fuck what he gave us in class and I'm going by the book. Plus to calculate the percentage of variation each effect has on the response variables you need to use 2^k, so it really doesn't make sense to me to use 2^(k-1) to calculate the main effects and interaction effects.

1) now that it's clear, i may climb up to the top of the rock wall, but i don't know whether i can.

I'm a little late on this, but personally I think this sentence sounds a lot better as: "now that it's clear, I can climb up to the top of the rock wall, but I don't know whether I'll be able/succeed/make it/whatever."

"I don't know whether I can" makes climbing a rock wall sound trivial, and it's ambiguous whether it's referring to physical ability or a heavily booked schedule with no time for rock climbing. "I may" just seems archaic in general to me, and makes me think of saying "may I please be excused" at the dinner table as a kid.

I guess those are just example sentences to illustrate the technical difference between may and can. "may" just seems like an archaic word in general that no one has any business using when everyone understands that in most contexts "can" means "to have permission" and in rare ones it refers to physical ability.

If you come out of college, and can't find a job. That's on you. It's not some nebulous wall street conspiracy, or the fault of politicians. It's not your parents fault, or your schools fault. The buck stops with you.

And, I agree with that.

While some generations have enjoyed better odds, and greater opportunity, the simple fact is that at the end of it... life isn't fair. We don't all get the same opportunities. And it's tough shit that the economy is in a down turn when this generation leaves college. Suck it up, do what you have to do, and deal with it. There weren't any guarantees, there never have been, and we all know it.

Enter the facts of life theme song.

> what's the relation between not being able to find work and feeling cheated they can't have well-paying work?

i think the segue is the sense of entitlement, which, i think, was lucas' point (emphasized by nny).

can't find work + no sense of entitlement? find something valuable to produce. can't find work + sense of entitlement? feel cheated because the world owes you a job.

you can say "the buck stops with you" as much as you want, but that doesn't discount the fact that society sells you something like "hard work/contribution to society = you will be compensated fairly," and seeing investment bankers who are completely unrelatable to the majority of society making out with huge bonuses while almost 10% of the country is unemployed is a little bit enraging, to say the least.

banks that sold shitty mortgages to people and did a bunch of other shitty stuff: what of value are they contributing to society? yet they're as strong as ever.

life is unfair, blah blah, but what's wrong with being pissed at it? I guess I'm saying you can be angry about all this stuff without being an entitled dick who thinks they deserve a cushy job.

I'm going to agree with asemi here.

The reason I brought up the "well-paying" part is I didn't like the idea of needing a job and complaining about not being able to find one as being the same as being an entitled ass. This is mostly because I spent a good chunk of last year unemployed, applying at every place that had a door and still unable to find work. I found a job at Wal-Mart and quit after a week and a half because I felt like my job was threatened anyway--in addition to the work environment being extremely hostile. I'm sorry, but I'd rather be unemployed than be treated how I was treated there, but I shouldn't have to make that choice anyway. It took me another 4 months to find a job after that. The only reason I did as well as I did was because my mom let me live at her house the entire time. I went to a couple of temp agencies and was never found even temporary work.

It's not possible to live without a job, so being pissed at not being able to find work seems like a perfectly valid complaint.

There's a lot of reasons to get angry if you afford yourself the luxury of blaming others for your misfortune.

Simple fact is, no one wants to hear anyone bitch about problems we all have.

It gets old quick. You want things to change? You change them. If there are no open positions, you create open positions. Actions speak, words fall on deaf ears.

And when I see some kid without a day of work experience clinging to their college degree and thinking that's enough to get their foot in the door... I gotta say, I find that sad.

Sure, maybe that kid was lied to about how shit actually works. Sure, maybe he's in trouble because of some politician or executive gutting his towns economy. But you know what... it happens every day. It's happened every day for as long as we've had human history. So I almost wonder, what is he expecting me to say? Tough shit is about all I can muster.

If he or she wants his position to change getting "angry" and "frustrated" isn't going to help them. They have to figure out a solution on their own. That's entirely on them. And that is all there is to it. So if you have a compulsion to get angry and frustrated by life... be prepared to be treated like shit by everyone you meet. Because we all hate that. In fact, if anyone actually puts up with that sort of whining from you. They are your friend. You buy them a beer. Because they've earned it.

I have said it before: complaining about stuff with no intention of doing something to fix it is fucking stupid. so I don't really disagree with nny. I just think that people have legit complaints about the economy right now that aren't totally unfounded. if some kid with a bachelor's is whining about not being able to get a job and afford to live by themself and have a car then fuck them. but if someone got laid off, has kids to feed, and can't even find like $10/hour work, I have a bit of a higher tolerance for complaining.

Last I heard (and this was from a friend earlier this year) McDonalds hires basically anyone.

The problem of entitlement has a lot to do with feeling like you are "above" certain jobs.

I have a problem with people who say they "literally" can't find a single job. That's most likely horseshit, as there are a whole truckload of god-awful jobs that you can get with no experience or qualifications whatsoever that pay money. It's just that most people feel entitled to more than a god-awful job.

Truth is, if you do have kids etc. that you're worried about (read: they are your number one priority), nothing should be below you.

Don't Let Your Walls Down
This probably could have gone into the education ethics thread or whatever, but I didn't want to spoil it with this rant.

Anyways, as I'm sure you're all aware of it's finals week or close to it for most. Well, It's crunch time here at Pitt with final projects due middle of next week. Thankfully for me, I took the 3 week's of nothing after midterms to get all my projects 75% done so this time of year wouldn't be as hectic...and it hasn't. All my shits done, and done well. I can focus on studying.

My problem is with the other people in my degree. The people who don't want to do anything until the last minute, the people who don't want to solve problems on their own, and the people who, well cheat. I pretty much his a boiling point today, and I let one of my professors know about it. I was sick and tired of working my ass off to meet the due dates and then seeing a majority of my classmates not give a rats ass and just wait for people like me to get it done so they could "ask questions". My favorite line is "I don't want to copy I just want to see if I did it right". I mean, I work hard to get my shit in by the deadline. It may be right, it may be wrong but that work is genuinely mine. The people who turn it in late, it seems, are getting the highest grades on the homework for obvious reasons.

Another event that made me flip was while helping this guy learn Java. Our final project for security relies heavily on Java and this dude knew absolutely zero Java. I mean after a week of explaining how to do stuff he all he had done was a program to do a simple MD5 hash of a string of text. Well he comes in today, after working with him last night, and has 99% of the project done. Mind you, it wasn't right, but it obviously wasn't written by him and he couldn't explain how any of the programs worked. Thats when I said fuck it. I finished the project for him, showed him how to run it and left. What I wrote wasn't what the project wanted and I'm sure when the GSA's look at the code he will probably get somewhere in the F range.

Maybe I'm losing faith in the program, my teachers, or maybe my classmates are just trolling me. Whatever the case I'm getting sick and tired of working my ass off and doing good work, only to be one upped by some prick who copied from someone else. I guess I thought this type of behavior wasn't done in graduate school but man was I wrong.

Yeah it's finals. I also dealt with a good amount of classmate procrastination. I think the best way to deal with that kind of stuff is to set expectations to mitigate those problems when you're in groups. You seem to be in the position where you are organized enough to lead your group. Early on in the projects you might want to consider establishing those expectations early and have consequences determined for not making meetings, milestones or tasks. Some consequences would be professor notification and elimination from the group at various levels of escalation. Yeah most students will feel like it's a bit overboard, but if you do it well and guide them to the tasks that suit them, they will probably do better than without the structure. I'm betting that you'll also learn quite a bit more about leading and understanding yourself as well.

If you notice, a lot of people will procrastinate and delay because they don't practice the skill of time management. Part of this is just because they're not organized enough and make untimely decisions with more pressure from the deadline than from forethought or reason. I really wouldn't blame them or hate them for having that behavior, maybe they don't value their degree as much, or they have gotten away with this for so long, or they have pressures in their lives that you don't understand.

That said, I wouldn't accept cheating in any of the projects I deal with. I'm not about to be associated with the guy or girl who felt like plagiarizing because of their procrastination and laziness. These should show genuine group creativity and thought. In business and technology some of the tools do not need to be reinvented, but it should be clear when those tools are used that they are not supplanting the thought and work that is put into it all.

As for the guy who needed to learn Java for the final project, how in the world did he get aligned with a project like that, or a major where this knowledge should be preestablished? :/

Don't lose faith, it's just an opportunity to understand the people and the causes of these friction points. Also this isn't only in graduate school, pretty sure you'll encounter these people in the world and the workplace too.

CZAR

Long used by the media as a metaphor for positions of high authority, including “baseball czar” Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, appointed by team owners as commissioner-for-life in 1919. U.S. president Woodrow Wilson had an “industry czar” during World War I. Lesser-known “czar” roles in government during the last 100 years include: censorship, housing and oil czars in 1941; rubber czar in 1942; patronage czar (1945); clean-up (1952); missile (1954); inflation (1971); e-commerce (1998); bioethics, faith-based and reading czars (2001); bird flu (2004); democracy (2005); abstinence and birth control czars (2006); and weatherization czar (2008).

George W. Bush appointed 47 people to 35 “czar” jobs; Pres. Obama, eight appointments to 38 positions.

"First it was a 'drug czar' [banished in 1990]. This year gave us a 'car czar.' What's next? A 'banished words czar'?" -- Michael F. Raczko, Swanton, Ohio.

"We have appointed a czar of such-and-such; clearly that's better than a 'leader,' 'coordinator' or 'director'! -- Derek Lawrence, Thunder Bay, Ont.

“The president has been handing these "czar" positions out like party favors.” – Scott Lassiter, Houston, Tex.
