I'm going to kick it off with one of my favorite genre's of all time,
Goa trance !
Astral Projection - Aurora Borealis
http://youtube.com/watch?v=M6GRhco-Q5U
Just let it play in the background as you browse for a while and see if you enjoy it. Hopefully you'll pick up on a bit of the difference between this and that mainstream techno sound you might characterize as such.
Contrast that with something that's a bit different, an
IDM , downtempo triphop, ambient:
Boards of Canada - Music is Math
http://youtube.com/watch?v=F7bKe_Zgk4o
Another IDM, drum and bass:
Amon Tobin - Proper Hoodidge
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JtWasI8CpQ8
An ambient:
M83 - Carresses
http://youtube.com/watch?v=iENl3L-5QU8
Downtempo, triphop:
Bonobo - Kota
http://youtube.com/watch?v=lTrzTk7vXM0
Ambient, downtempo, triphop:
Air - Run
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BZT9t6oMBhI
Goa:
Juno Reactor - Masters of the Universe
http://youtube.com/watch?v=n01oW4bMA4E
Triphop, ambient, chillout:
Massive Attack - Teardrop
http://youtube.com/watch?v=fG8eQBSp9Ao
Most of the ones I just posted are artists/bands who I have been keeping track of for quite a while. Boards of Canada might be the most recent addition.
It's difficult to find a subdivision of electronic music to like. Personally a lot of trance doesn't do it for me. I also don't very much like industrial, hardcore, techno, or jungle. I prefer the tunes along the lines of the genre's attached to the aforementioned songs.
ah fuck, I missed a colon:
Astral Projection
edit: now with revisions, I updated the original post ;)

AWESOME kicks in ~ 2:35
Disclaimer: Don't auto-trust the interesting factoids. I noticed several spelling/grammatical errors just watching a short blip.
I doubt this counts as real electronica, but fuck it...I love this song.
